Lying On Your Resume - Is It Ever A Good Idea?

Lying on your resume might seem like a good idea if you don't have the experience necessary for the positions you want. Especially if you think you can do the job.

Lying can also seem like a good idea if there is something you want to hide in your background. Especially if it's something you know will be concern for a lot of employers.

But the truth is that lying on your resume is never a good idea.

If you are lying because you have something to hide, what do you think will happen when your employer finds out about your lie? Is he or she going to forgive you now that you have turned out to be a good employee? Perhaps, but it's certain that your relationship will never be the same again. And if you lied on your resume, you probably told the same lie on your application form, which is much more serious. A resume isn't a legal document - you don't sign it to certify that you have told the truth. But that's not the case with an application form. All applications ask you to confirm that you have been truthful. So when your employer finds out about your lie and checks your application, it's quite likely that you will be terminated.

How about lying because you don't have the right experience? Well, just imagine for a second that you actually get the job. The employer will be expecting you to know the things you stated on your resume. Because you don?t, you will likely not succeed in your new role and nothing is worse than being in over your head.

So what?s the alternative?

Tell the truth.

It?s really that simple. Does it mean you might be rejected? Yes, of course. But telling the truth on your resume greatly lessens the likelihood that you will be hired for a job you can?t do.

Be honest about who you are and what you?ve done and you will find a job that suits you. A job that you can do well in. A job that will help erase the need to ever even think about lying on your resume.
